Science of Soft Robots – Interdisciplinary integration of mechatronics, material science, and bio-computing

B01-20 : Green robotics: development of biodegradable soft robotic elements

Summary

Leader Jun Shintake (The University of Electro-Communications)

Soft robots will be environmentally friendly when they have a functionality being able to return to the soil, namely biodegradability. Most of robotic elements such as actuators and sensors operate electrically, and if they can be made from biodegradable materials, it will lead to the realization of highly integrated and environmentally friendly soft robots. The objective of this project is to develop biodegradable materials with mechanical and electrical properties that are oriented to soft robotics. The developed materials will be applied to electrically controlled actuators and sensors, and we will demonstrate the technology by constructing a robotic system in which they work together.
